How Do You Know What Headlight Bulb Goes in Your Vehicle?

If your headlight has blown, one of the first questions you’ll ask is:
“What bulb does my vehicle actually need?”
With so many different bulb types on the market, it’s not always straightforward. In this guide, we’ll explain how to identify the correct headlight bulb quickly and safely.
1️⃣ Check Your Vehicle Handbook
The simplest place to start is your vehicle’s owner manual. It will list:
The bulb type (e.g., H7, H4, D1S, etc.)
Whether it’s halogen, HID (xenon), or LED
Separate types for dipped beam, main beam, and sidelights
If you don’t have the handbook, many manufacturers provide digital versions online.
2️⃣ Look at the Existing Bulb
If you’re comfortable doing so, you can remove the blown bulb and check the metal base. The bulb type is usually printed or stamped on it.
Common types include:
H7 – Single beam halogen (very common)
H4 – Dual beam halogen (dipped & main combined)
D1S / D2S – Xenon (HID) bulbs
LED units – Often manufacturer-specific
⚠️ Always disconnect power and avoid touching the glass of halogen bulbs with bare fingers.
3️⃣ Use an Online Bulb Checker
Most reputable motor factor websites have a vehicle registration lookup tool. Enter your:
Registration number
Make
Model
Year
And it will tell you the correct bulb type.
However, be careful — some vehicles have different specifications depending on trim level.
4️⃣ Ask a Professional
Modern vehicles can be more complex than they look. Some newer cars:
Use sealed LED units (not replaceable bulbs)
Require bumper removal to access headlights
Have adaptive lighting systems
If you're unsure, it’s always safer to have it checked properly.
Why Getting the Right Bulb Matters
Fitting the wrong bulb can cause:
MOT failure
Reduced visibility
Dashboard warning lights
Electrical faults
It can also be illegal if the beam pattern is incorrect.
